Natural Feedback
Delay decides whether a loop stabilizes or oscillates.
Observation
Lynx and hare populations rise and fall in a long wobble rather than settling. Each side responds to the other, but not immediately — births take time, and by the time the response lands the situation has moved.
The oscillation is not caused by the strength of the response. It is caused by its lateness.
Pattern
A correcting loop with a long delay tends to overshoot. Increasing the strength of the correction usually makes the swing worse, not smaller.
Systems that stay steady tend to do something else: they shorten the delay, or they act on a leading indicator instead of the outcome.
Elsewhere
The bullwhip in supply chains is this exact shape — an ordering loop reacting to stale demand. Hiring cycles behave similarly, with the correction arriving a quarter after it was needed.
So does a thermostat placed in the wrong room.
Question
When a system oscillates, is the more useful intervention to weaken the response or to measure earlier?
Most organizational responses reach for strength. It would be interesting to know how often latency was the actual variable.
Break
Ecological loops have no one deciding. Organizational loops have people who anticipate the correction and act ahead of it, which changes the loop being modeled.
Once the parts of the system can predict the controller, the control analogy starts to leak.
The resemblance is the beginning of the question, not the answer.
